NFL: Angry Andy's 5 Picks

by Angry Andy

"With correctly calling exactly how a few games would go (Jets & Patriots down to the wire and Sanchez blowing it) but then getting a few games completely wrong every week (Ravens getting demolished by Texans and I do believe Oakland where backed against the Broncos which is totally inexcusable) what has gone wrong in the accumulator and is there still time to fix this awful record?”

I'm going to leave this room and I'm going to bring in a suggestion box and I want your suggestions to be in that suggestion box because I sure don't know. I really don't. I wish I could tell you. But the only thing I control, sweetheart, is myself. Statistically, I am the leader of this column and I haven't been getting the job done.

"Suggestion: Backing the Number 1 team in the league which has to be the only undefeated team left in the Atlanta Falcons right?"

The Atlanta Falcons are indeed the only team in the NFL that have not lost. However they remind me of Rocky Balboa . . . At the start of Rocky 3 when Rocky is beating all the bums convincing while defending his title. Here is the thing, Atlanta have not been all that convincing against low opposition (Anyone taking Oakland or Carolina for the Superbowl, anyone?).  If you were to take the combined record of every team Atlanta has played so far, you would get a 13-24 record making the Falcons schedule thus far the easiest in the league. It’s only a matter of time before the Falcons drop a game. If they can respond like Houston, only then will I take them seriously as contenders.

"Suggestion: Considering how you feel about Atlanta, how desperate Philadelphia are for a win and Andy Reid being a perfect 13-0 in the bye week, you must be backing the Eagles in this one?"

Everyone has hopped on the Eagles bandwagon this week. Philadelphia need to bounce back fast, especially if the Giants overcome the Cowboys tonight. When has a 3-3 team ever been -3 with the bookmakers over an undefeated team? Falcons are due a loss and all the statistics favor the Eagles. Well, except for them firing their defensive co-ordinator Juan Costillo after losing the Detriot despite have a 10 point advantage inside the last 3 and a half minutes of the game. They’ve had two weeks to totally readjust their defense. On offense, they have a quaterback who turns the ball over against a team who ranks 4th with 17 takeaways this year.

Andy Reid has been 13-0 in the bye season. But I expect this season to be his last in a year that everything goes against him. Even if the Eagles sneak out a win, they have not won a game by more than 2 points. If the Eagles go down early, expect the crowd to turn on Vick and Reid. Therefore:

Falcons (+3.0) over EAGLES

"Suggestion: The Patriots are not the same force they once where and to stop backing them as such"

New England are being outscored 27-6 in the 4th quarter. The Jets should have won last Sunday if it was not for a dropped pass in the fourth and then the Jets being too conservative after the turnover and then reverting into prevent defense when Brady was marching his troops down towards the end of the game. This was following a 3 and out by the Patriots. Stick to the game plan and this would have been a bounce back game for New England this week. I wouldn’t read too much into that game as the Jets are the Patriots main rival and it was always gonna be close. This week the Patriots take on the Rams in the London game. The Rams main offense revolves around running back Steven Jackson. The running game is the one strong point off this Patriots D. Tom Brady is going to want to fix the 4th quarter rows and Wembley is setting up the perfect stage to do it

Patriots (-7.0) over RAMS Rams (Wembley Game)

"Suggestion: Cam Newton is a one season wonder and will soon fall by the wayside like Vince Young, so back against them every week"

First of all, I hate how the media has turned this into Newton haters throwing out the race card by having compared Newton to Young. Race does not come into it. Young was a promising talented QB who had a similar style of play to Newton. Even if there are certain aspects of Newton’s play that could be compared to Big Ben for example, to throw out the race card just because a player is not performing is stupid in my book. Regardless of that, Newton has not been playing well this year. He is still very talented so I do expect to see him turn it around, just not against the Chicago Bears defense. Even when their offense struggles and their quarterback, Jay Cutler gets decimated
This team still finds a way defensively to win ball games.

BEARS (-7) over Panthers

"Suggestion: With RG3 electrifying the league right now, this must lead to a turn around in the Redskins organization. You have to bet on any game he is in, just to make it all the more enjoyable. Is he a better player than Andrew Luck?"

A lot of talk this week has been about who is the better player between Luck and RG£ including a polarizing article on ESPN by Rick Reilly on the matter. No one has been as entertaining under centre since Michael Vick. RG3 has been phenomenal to watch this season. But Michael Vick only has 2 wins to his name in the post season. I’m not saying that that will happen to RG3 but the playoffs are a completely different animal where the fumbles may not fall so kindly for the Redskins. However, we are not in the playoffs yet so I do like the odds against the Steelers. I think Andrew Luck is going to be a big time player as well. Already with a big victory under his belt over the Packers, he has performed well in the that big shadow in Indy that is the legacy of Peyton Manning. With that in mind, it’s probably good for Luck that all the comparisons are with RG3 rather than his predecessor

Redskins (+4.5) over STEELERS

"Suggestion: Stripping The Cowboys off being America’s Team cause they are becoming more irrelevant by the years."

The Cowboys got a much needed victory last week and host the Giants this week. The line, for me, is way too small. Using the same way of thought that I did when I said last week that the Giants would not lose to the Redskins (off by one point!), I don’t see New York losing twice to the Cowboys. You have to go back to the 90s for the last time the Cowboys truly mattered in this league. I don’t think this pairing of Garrett and Romo will change that. So can the new face of America’s Team please step up?

Giants (-2) over COWBOYS

"Suggestion: So the Oakland Raiders are . . "

STOP!!!! You want to follow the question of America’s Team with the Raiders? Better chance that God stops hating Cleveland!

One of the reasons that last weeks record does not look so good is the fact that I was winning the Niners game till Harbaugh took points off the board. One thing that really impressed me with this decision is that he was thinking completely differently to the rest of us. That’s something that makes him a stand out coach.

A few weeks ago, the Cardinals were 4-0 and this Monday night game was mouth watering. However the Cards have lost three straight and, come Monday, it will be four. It’s the same line as the Seattle game, but, as always, gotta favor my Niners

Plus:
49ers (-7) over ARIZONA

"Suggestion: With the season almost approaching the half way mark, do you now feel the pressure to win the accumulator before the season is out, especially considering that @AMTRick won his Premier League accumulator yesterday?"

That was a question, not a suggestion. And we out of time folks.

Last Week: 2-4
Season: 18-23
Accumulator: 0-7
